~ Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune under the guidance of Dr. Rusell D’Souza, Head South East Asia initiated the Indian Program of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa at Dr. D. Y. Patil, Pune auditorium from 6 to 8 December’ 2018.
At the Program, three days were devoted to deliver the 3T -IHSc (Train, Teach and Transfer (Bioethics and Human Rights knowledge) Integrated Bioethics in Health Sciences. The accredited 3T-IBHSc Bioethics Training Program has been designed to introduce teaching faculty of Medical, Dental and Health Science of Universities and Colleges the modern ‘Vertically Integrated Bioethics Curriculum’ based on the core curriculum. This curriculum reflects the 15 principals enshrined in the UNESCO’s Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005). These principals were developed by experts under the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics, Haifa.
Down the years, MCI Governors have endeavoured to integrate Ethics into the Medical curriculum. This Course is made available to all the Government Health Science Universities and private health sciences Universities hosting a nodal centre under the Association of Indian Health Science Universities – UNESCO Chair in Bioethics National Program.
The successful completion of this course for teaching faculty makes them eligible for admission to International Forum of Teachers of Bioethics Europe and offers credentialing in the ability to teach integrated Bioethics in their specialty. This will accomplish the introduction of Bioethics curriculum in medical dental and allied health science courses.
The accredited Bioethics course is delivered in a workshop model using a cafeteria setting, with interactive and innovative knowledge transfer methodology. The Course will introduce modern Bioethics knowledge transfer technology which includes the underpinnings of neuro-cognition sciences on teaching competencies, emotional intelligence in teaching methodology for medical, dental and allied health science teaching faculty. The use of innovative teaching methodology will be demonstrated, with workshopping of a fully evaluated case-based teaching methodology, to be further used in the teaching and training in undergraduate medical education program.
The simulated teaching module and assessment at the end of the Course, will offer dynamic feedback on teaching skills and knowledge transfer technology demonstrated. The successful completion with certification, offers credentials in competencies to teach Bioethics in their respective, medical and dental discipline. The added requirements of post-graduate qualifications in the discipline and teaching experience are required as a pre- condition for admission for the accredited 3T-IBHSc Bioethics course. The certification offers eligibility for admission and registration with the ‘International Forum of Teachers of Bioethics’ of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics based at Sophia University.
To take it to the next level, several Programs have been planned like the National Medical Bioethics, a National Dental Bioethics, National Pharmacy Bioethics, National Nursing Bioethics and National Allied Health Sciences Bioethics. Teaching faculties from all Colleges under Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune attended the three day Program. About 38 faculties from various disciplines have been successful in completing this course. These faculties will in turn introduce and teach the bioethics curriculum in their respective disciplines. Dr. Derek D’Souza, National Co-coordinator 3T - IBHSc Course, MIMER, Pune coordinated the program.

On the occasion, Dr. P. N. Razdan, Vice Chancellor, Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune delivered the welcome address. Dr. Vedprakash Mishra, Honorary Chancellor, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Karad and Head of the UNESCO Academic Program was the Chief Guest. While addressing the gathering, he shared his knowledge about bioethics and offered his guidance to the participants.
